What Indigenous interns say

I was in awe of the work that NAAJA does to help the Northern Territories Indigenous population across all these sections, and was glad that I had the opportunity to experience this. Being a woman with Aboriginal heritage myself, it felt good to be able to do work that directly affected my community.  This internship made me feel like I was putting all I have learnt through my life experiences, and through university in Melbourne, to practice. I felt like a valid member of the team.

Kassie McAlear, NAAJA

It has been an enjoyable and valuable learning experience. I have met some wonderful people and have been exposed to amazing and important research about deficit discourses. Overall a pleasant and rewarding internship.

Courtney-Rose Barker-Finegan, NCIS

It’s been great to not only learn about Paramedic practice here but also to work within Aboriginal communities.  While I have studies them at uni, there is really nothing that can prepare you for how big the education and health gaps are in these communities until you are here.  For me it’s been a true learning experience.

Carrington Bond, St John Ambulance

The Aurora internship has been very beneficial to my studies and extended my legal knowledge. I have thoroughly enjoyed working in the non-for profit sector and working alongside passionate legal professionals. Working in native title has confirmed my interest in this legal area and I hope to work as a legal practitioner in a NTRB organisation upon graduation.

Mikaela French, CYLC

My internship with TEWLS completely overwhelmed my expectations.  The work I completed at TEWLS was both challenging and meaningful. I consider the lessons I learnt in terms of both specific legal skills and general professional development to be invaluable.

Alannah Lenehan, TEWLS

I have really enjoyed my time and all the people I have met and I hope to one day work with them in the future.

Kae Cox, Telethon

The entire experience has equipped me with valuable social work skills. I have had the opportunity to build professional relationships, created opportunities to network and was always encouraged to talk about Aboriginal culture. The internship has provided real hands on practical workplace experience. Key Assets is an inclusive and culturally safe workplace environment. Overall, I found the work to be a rewarding and enriching experience.

Jaala Ozies, Key Assets

My learning has been very rich indeed in terms of looking back at history how it has created policy and legislation and where we as a Nation are sitting and where do we go from here.

Kizzy Smith, DLGSCI-ACHWA

I had a great experience and couldn't recommend it enough.  The most rewarding aspects were getting the opportunity to work with mob and give back to the community, as well as getting to use new skills and knowledge.  I ended up learning so much I never thought I could get a hang of.

Chenoa Masters, NCIE

Sad to see an end to what was an amazing internship. The people at Studio Hackett were a huge contribution to that. Ping pong games and staff meals still very strong and as enjoyable as ever. Thank you Aurora for providing such a mad, mad experience!

Zac Duczynski, Studio Hacket
