Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council

Being Torres Strait Islander, the most rewarding aspects were interning in an environment where people looked, sounded and thought like me. People knew how to pronounce my surname! It was really amazing being immersed in my culture and I learnt so much. It was incredibly affirming work, and the role and aspirations of GBK aligned with my values too. It was a privilege to meet and work with the team. The internship demonstrated the importance of surrounding yourself with people who care about you, your culture and living life at a slower pace.  The best aspect was being able to connect with powerful First Nations' organisations who are doing the ground work in their communities.

The experience was incredibly valuable and rewarding, and I left the Straits with a newfound sense of purpose and pride.

The internship provided me with a once in a lifetime opportunity to immerse myself in a remote Indigenous community, and to be exposed to the culture, challenges and unique way of life there.  All in all, the Aurora internship was an incredibly immersive experience, and one which I feel very grateful for.
